Effect of chloride and benzoate anions on the delayed light emission in DCMU-treated spinach chloroplasts.

چکیده
Chloride anions, when added to DCMU [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-l ,I-dimethylureal-treated spinach chloroplasts, change the rate of decay of the delayed light emission in the seconds region but do not change the shape or the temperature dependence of the decay. Benzoate anions, on the other hand, change both the rate and the shape of the decay of the delayed light emission. These results are consistent with a model in which the membrane potential and the structure of the reaction center affect the decay kinetics of the delayed light emission in the seconds region.

Luminescence of chlorophyll in spinach chloroplasts induced by acid-base transition.
The occurrence of a delayed light emission in photosynthetic organisms was first reported by Strehler and Arnold.' This emission was shown to have the same spectrum as that of the fluorescence of chlorophyll in vivo,2 but a much greater lifetime. It therefore reflects the restoration of singlet excited states in chlorophyll at the expense of metastable energy. Arnold and Sherwood3 have proposed...
متن کاملEFFECTS OF BICARBONATE ION ON CHLOROPHYLL a FLUORESCENCE TRANSIENTS AND DELAYED LIGHT EMISSION FROM MAIZE CHLOROPLASTS
Using high-intensity actinic light, the chlorophyll a fluorescence transient from HC0,-depleted chloroplasts shows a rapid initial rise (0 + 1) followed by a slow phase ( I + P). In the presence of HC0,-, the 0 -+ I rise is delayed but the I + P phase is much more rapid. Using lowintensity actinic light, the chlorophyll a fluorescence transient from 3-(3.4-dichlorophenyI)I , I dimethylurea (DCM...
متن کاملInorganic anions induce state changes in spinach thylakoid membranes.
The role of cations in excitation energy distribution between the two photosystems of photosynthesis is well established. This paper provides evidence, for the first time, for an important role of anions in the regulation of distribution of absorbed light energy between the two photosystems. Inorganic anions caused redistribution of energy more in favour of photosystem I, as judged from measure...
متن کاملThermoluminescence in spinach chloroplasts and in Chlorella.
SUMMARY Preilluminated spinach chloroplasts and Chlorella pyrenoidosa, when subjected to a quick temperature jump of about 15 °, emit light. This thermoluminescence is observed both in normal and 3(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-l,l.dimethylurea.treated samples, but is absent when hydroxylamine is added to either of these samples. These results are explained in terms of a oack reaction of System II of pho...
متن کاملSilicomolybdate and silicotungstate mediated dichlorophenyldimethylurea-insensitive photosystem II reaction: electron flow, chlorophyll a fluorescence and delayed light emission changes.
We have investigated the possible role of silicomolybdate and silicotungstate as acceptors of electrons in chloroplasts directly from Q, the primary electron acceptor of Photosystem II. Our data show: 1. Either of these compounds can accept electrons directly from Q in a 3-(3', 4'-dichlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea (DCMU)-insensitive electron transport; however, the DCMU insensitivity is only s...
